In the master bedroom, the mother busied herself with taking little Gabe’s clothes off on the changing stand. He had seen Lucy do it a thousand times. She would put her hand on their children’s bellies so they wouldn’t roll off and crack their eggshell skulls on the hard floor (oh how Lucy could terrify Alfie with tales of negligent parents).
